UR SOCIETY NO LONGER has the musical sensitivity it once did. Things that Catholics in the Middle Ages would hear as contrasting we consider monotonous. Things Renaissance Catholics would respond to—such as the change from four voices to three—we consider mundane. It’s similar to when I listen to great pianists: there’s a world of difference between an exciting interpreter like Josef Hofmann and a boring one like Claudio Arrau, yet those who haven’t spent decades imbibing pianism probably couldn’t tell the difference.
