From the life of Saint Isaac Jogues:
Turning to God in his anguish,
Father Jogues heard an answering
echo to his cry. “I heard,
very distinctly,” he relates,
“a voice which condemned me
for my anguish of soul, and
which advised me to think of God
only in His goodness, and to
cast myself entirely upon Him.
I heard, I repeat, those words
which I understood to be from
Saint Bernard writing to his monks:
Serve God in that charity and love
which cast out fear; such
love does not regard merit.
These two counsels were given
to me very opportunely,
for my soul was being burdened
down with an excessive fear.”
