SGR. GEORG RATZINGER (96), brother to Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, was laid to rest last week in his adopted city of Regensburg, Germany. Ratzinger, the former director of the world renowned Regensburger Domspatzen, spent 30 years leading the choir, and more than 200 former choristers returned to sing Vespers for the Dead in St. Peter’s Cathedral, where his body was present. I doubt the Divine Office in the vernacular could have been more beautifully sung and I was particularly moved by the fauxbordon setting of the Magnificat (beginning around 17:00).
His funeral followed five days laters, also in the Regensburg Cathedral.
Requiem æternam dona eis, Domine. Et lux perpetua luceat eis. Amen.
