ONSIGNOR Higinio Anglés, a Spanish priest and musicologist, was director of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. He did the world a tremendous service by creating the Opera Omnia (“Complete works”) of Father Cristóbal de Morales, one of the greatest composers of all time. But that doesn’t mean Monsignor Anglés was infallible. For example, I don’t see how this can be the correct typesetting (from the Cappella Sistina MS 17 version of Missa Mille Regretz):
(This was probably the fault of graduate students who assisted Monsignor Anglés.)
Now, here is another example. Can you tell the error?
If you can discover the error, you must be an expert! However, the Hilliard Ensemble deserves credit because they not only discovered this error (in the 1990s) but brilliantly found the solution. Stay tuned, because I will soon launch my own edition, which incorporates the corrected version.
