HE GREAT HONOR of life has been helping to prepare the Brébeuf Hymnal, which will be available for purchase in a few weeks. The melodies in this book are absolutely gorgeous, but usually “simple”—that is, easy for congregations to sing. Whenever possible, I pushed for melodies written or adapted by Johann Sebastian Bach (although some were too ornate), whose music I listen to every day.
One melody used several times in the Brébeuf comes from this magnificent Bach fugue. I recorded all the voices—pardon my screechy soprano notes!—but imagine how majestic it would sound with a real choir:
