URING ONE OF THE SESSIONS at this year’s Sacred Music Symposium we looked hymns with terrible voice leading. Contrariwise, we also looked at some exceptionally beautiful hymn melodies, and had a blast sight-reading them. From my draft copy of the St. Jean de Brébeuf Hymnal, I pulled out some gorgeous tunes, which are not sung as frequently as they should be.
If you can name this tune, you really know your hymn tunes:
Toward the middle of July, final proofreading on the Brébeuf hymnal will commence. Those interested in lending assistance should email the committee. Make sure the word “proofreader” is in your email’s subject line. Final proofreading was scheduled to begin in June—but this project has been half a decade in the making, and such things cannot be rushed.
For the record, the St. Jean de Brébeuf Hymnal has vastly exceeded our expectations in terms of quality. It is absolutely unique, and marvelous beyond anything we could have anticipated.
