HE ARCHBISHOP of Kraków (a prince by birth) was for a short time a Senator of the Second Polish Republic. Here he is at the Consistory of Cardinals (under Pius XII) held on 18 February 1946:
My Polish is horrible, but I believe his full name was: “Adam Stefan Stanisław Bonifacy Józef Sapieha.” In August 1944, Sapieha was forced to operate the Polish seminary in secret because the Germans were killing seminarians wherever they found them. He therefore moved his students—including the future Pope Saint John Paul II, Karol Wojtyła—into the Bishop’s Palace in Kraków to finish their studies during the Nazi Occupation of Poland.
