FEAST OF THE PRESENTATION is a special for me because as the traditional end to the Christmas season, it allows me to celebrate Christmas and the gift of the Incarnation a little longer than secular society (although my Christmas tree didn’t make it this year).
This year marked the first time during my tenure that our parish and school held the traditional blessing of candles on this feast day, which is why the day is also called Candlemas. I was struck by the fact that the simple act of blessing and lighting candles has kept bringing the Mass back to my mind throughout the week. It is another proof to me of why signs and symbols (the Sacraments being the ultimate ones) are so important to our Faith. Plus what school child doesn’t enjoy a little fire early in the school day!
