HERE IS AN AWFUL LOT of confusion out there today about the sacred liturgy—what the liturgy essentially is, why we celebrate it, whether it should be ancient or modern in its ethos, who is supposed to do what, when are we “actively participating” and how should we do, etc. It doesn’t help that the Catholic Church, for the first time in her 2,000 years of history, has two highly contrasting forms of the Roman Rite. It is not an easy situation to understand, let alone navigate, and one who wishes to find his or her bearings needs more than ever to seek out the truth in study, reflection, and prayer.
