N A FASCINATING BOOK by Msgr. John Tracy Ellis that’s been out of print for more than five decades, I found a few pages dealing with the use of vernacular in the liturgy around the year 1800:
* * Archbishop Carroll & Vernacular Liturgy
There’s a lot worth discussing in those pages, and I hope to publish a longer reflection at some point.
However, at the moment what interests me most is the sixty-page pastoral letter written by the Archbishop of Dublin (John Thomas Troy, †1823) defending the use of Latin in the liturgy. Does anyone have access to that document? Can anyone locate it? Boy, that would be a fascinating document to read!
