ODAY IS A DAY OF PRAYER and fasting for peace in Syria. At 7pm in Rome the Pope will lead the rosary for the crowds in St Peter’s Square. There have been many suggestions for ways to join in, including alms-giving, taking the time to teach young ones about war here on earth and the peace which Christ gives and bringing people together to pray.
Gregorian chant is a great resource for transcending cultural differences and joining people in prayer. There is a simple chant especially for peace. It has been a good one to teach to children as it is fairly short and has that great yearning sound to it.
Da pacem Domine in diebus nostris, quia non est alius, qui pugnet pro nobis nisi tu Deus noster.
Grant peace, Lord, in our days; for there is no other who will fight for us, except thee, our God.
Here is a recording of my son and me singing it.
You can find the score in gregobase or download and print this arrangement matching the antiphon with Psalm 50, Miserere Mei.
Our Lady, Queen of Peace, pray for us! (and happy birthday for tomorrow!)
