VERONICA BRANDT has long searched for an easy way to become musically proficient, even choosing St Cecilia at her confirmation way back in the 1990s. After despairing of ever achieving a consistent practice routine, she branched off into studying computers, graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Along the way she started attending the Latin Mass at the Maternal Heart of Mary Church. A young man named Peter helped her follow the Mass in her missal and so she married him and dived into raising and homeschooling six children.
The Engineering degree introduced her to an arcane typesetting system called TeX, which turned out to be useful for typing up Gregorian chant. Soon Veronica ended up typing music for different groups and thereby learning much about Gregorian chant. Being fussy about understanding the music she was hearing at Mass, she built up her own little book of hymns in Latin and English called A New Book of Old Hymns. In 2014 the book received an Imprimatur.

Veronica lives in the Blue Mountains and helps out with music at the weekly Latin Mass at Our Lady of the Nativity, Lawson served by FSSP Parramatta. More about her adventures in homeschooling, knitting and her husband’s drawings can be found at brandt.id.au. She still has major difficulty maintaining a consistent practice routine.
